Season 1 Skyler has little characterization besides being designed seemingly deliberately to be obnoxious. Then they realized they could actually make her an interesting and sympathetic character, and by season 5, can't grasp most of the hate.

I only finished the first season, but isn't the whole point that they're all a bunch of flawed people making less-than-perfect decisions?

I mean, she emotionally blackmailed Walt to start chemo, Walt killed a guy in cold blood, Marie's a shoplifter and her husband's kinda racist, and Jesse is Jesse.

None of them are flawless, blameless human beings.

But some are a lot more flawed than others. Forcing Walt into chemo is a typical human reaction against the loss of a family member and provider. Shoplifting, murder, drug manufacturing, more murder, police brutality, etc, on the other hand...
