Unfairly bashed characters

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some characters who you feel get unfairly bashed in fandom? Either bashed harder for their flaws than they deserve, or bashed for reasons that don't make sense, or bashed because they get in the way of ship/whatever.

Ron Weasley - obvious but most honest answer

no he wasn't perfect. he was flawed. I can see why his character might annoy some people. but bashing him seems to be (or have been) a fandom hobby. people were writing him as abusive or straight-up as a Death Eater just because they didn't like him :/

I agree, and I say this as someone who was never particularly fond of him. Mostly because some of his character flaws were things that particularly bug me. But he was a good character, a good friend, a complicated and believable character, and a hero. And the bashing got old.

Vanessa Abrams from Gossip Girl (The show)

Ultimately, the writers threw her under the bus right before putting her on it, but I still think she gets more hate than is deserved. I quite like her as a character, despite her flaws.

And I mean...it's Gossip Girl. Nobody comes out of that show smelling like roses.

Dumbledore tbh. I mean, yeah, he did a lot of highly questionable things in his gambit to defeat Voldemort, but you'd think from the fandom that he was sitting around twirling his mustache and just doing it all for lols and was omniscient and could have invented some easy alternate solution out of thin air (the "why did he give Harry to the Dursleys" thing especially -- you'd think it wasn't explained explicitly at least three times during the books why Harry had to go to the Dursleys).

Molly Weasley. I don't even actually like her, but I still hate the bashing.

Since I'm listening to podcasts/reading recaps after the first episode of this season, people are unnecessarily awful to Angela on Mr. Robot. To be fair, that is also the show's attitude as well, but I think she's the most realistic person on the show and I'm interested to see where she ends up.

Someone no one cares about but me. Sam from The Walking Dead.

aka: The child that Carol mentally tortured. The child who's parents were too busy with their relationship drama to attend to. The child who everyone hates for acting like a normal child.

Sam, you deserved so much more.

So my SO doesn't go on this forum but I feel the need to bring up Lavender Brown for their sake. (They are head of the Lavender Brown Defense Squad, because yeah Lavender had flaws but she was also 16 and got a really disproportionate amount of hate. I'm not really in the HP fandom though so that is just me remembering what my SO has said :p)

For me: Cosette doesn't get bashed as much anymore in the Les Mis fandom but I will still defend her to the end. Also its not quite bashing but I will personally fight anyone who calls ST:TOS Uhura "useless"

Mabel Pines (Gravity Falls). She gets bashed a lot for being selfish, for causing Armageddon (it makes sense in context) and for always getting her way, for being shallow, and...none of that's true.

I mean yes, she is a bit selfish, but 1) she's 12. All 12 year olds are a little selfish. And 2) it's addressed as a flaw and she does start to grow past it. All the characters are flawed in some way. As for Armageddon, she was tricked, in a moment of emotional distress, into giving up the MacGuffin that caused it.

She gets flack for every single thing she does while the male characters (who are just as flawed and make just as many mistakes) get praised and meta written about them, while she's ignored as 'just glitter and sweaters'.

I think any character that is called "trash" or "garbage" or the like is getting unfair treatment. I'm so sick of this trend of calling someone--even if it's "just" a character--awful names under the guise of liking/loving them. Unless the character is a villain, there is no need say that you want to stab/shoot/kill or otherwise harm or hate a character for doing something harmless or silly or dorky.

Korra. Yes she can be immature and reckless, but it never took away from her being an awesome heroine. And many male heroes have similar flaws, and they never get crapped on for it. :/

This might seem like an odd choice, but on rereading, Bakugou from Boku no Hero Academia. A lot of people, myself included, expected him to mirror Sasuke from Naruto, and it was only once it became obvious he would never, ever go that route that I started to notice all the indications he was smarter and more aware than he got credit for.

Tom Keen on the Blacklist. It's like people just plain don't get the narrative function of ambiguous antagonists in spy stories.

Although his vocal defenders also just plain don't understand ambiguity and see him as a morally pure knight in shining armor, so they're all idiots.

Pro-tip: you can see a character as ~problematic~ and still like them, without this being any kind of window into the state of your immortal soul.

So tired of people either bashing Sam to make Dean look better, or vice versa.

They're both flawed, messed up characters who make mistakes. Neither of them is perfect, and it'd be boring if they were.

Sebastian from Dragon Age 2. Yeah he has flaws and could've used some bteeter character development, but the way fandom demonises him is terrible.

Yes, he wants Anders dead after the latter kills Elthina (and likely many other people he cared about), but at the same time he berates Meredith for wanting to punish non-Anders mages.

Yes, his faith comes up often as the talks, but he never actually tries to convert anyone. Hell, he even says that he doesn't believe in preaching.
