Beyond: Two Souls was a phenomenal concept for a video game with a decent story, that turned out to be absolute trash because A) Your choices actually affected very, VERY little in the story, B) There was no way to lose because the creator considered game overs to be a flaw in video game design, making everything feel cheap, and C) It was basically a really long movie that occasionally required you to hit x to see more of it.

While I agree that Beyond Two Souls was not nearly as complex as it presented, I'd agree with the creator about "game overs". Well, ideally. Those types of games aren't really testing skill, it really is an interactive movie more focused on immersive storytelling than gameplay, and I think that's fine, even appropriate, for the genre. I'd agree that a game like that shouldn't have "losing", at least not in the traditional sense.

But if a game requires no actual effort, is it in fact a game? I'm not sure how I myself would answer that question, but it's certainly something to think about.

I think so. I don't think games have to involve winning or losing as long as they involve interaction. It's not a traditional game, no, but it's a medium of storytelling that requires a console. I think those "movie" type games are a really interesting mode of storytelling.

I feel like for me, if it doesn't involve winning or losing, it should at least feel like your input matters. Linear storytelling is fine if your input matters elsewhere, like in gameplay. Branch storytelling is fine if your choices actually...well, branch. Beyond fell somewhere in between those two.
