Because... they're not you?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That's kind of a petty thing to do, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's petty to have a mind of your own and/or wish you were playing the new game?

It's an entirely different game in an entirely different genre with an entirely different mode of gameplay.

I'm fully aware of why I can't play Pokemon Go--I don't have a smartphone, I don't have the money for one, I don't have the time, in general smartphones don't interest me so I'm not going to buy one just to play Pokemon, etc. Doesn't mean I can't still express a desire to join in on the fun.

Yes, I know I can't play, but everyone else seems to be having so much fun! :( I AM JELLY.

(I don't even want to win, I just want to run around catching Pokejos. Maybe one of my friends will one day be bored and just give me their phone for a few hours to run around the local arboretum catching things!)

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
i just hope they have a version soon so that people with mobility issues can play, it sucks that a lot of my friends and family can't play because they can't get around easily outside :(

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-07-22 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Play the original games?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Hell, the original games are much better. Not every game can cater to everyone.

this is not a game for the immobile

sorry but the whole point is getting out and about

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
agreed tbh. you want to play a pokemon game that doesn't require you to move, play any one of the dozens of other ones. i for one am glad that it requires me to actually get up and go outside because i spend all day sitting down at my job.

I hope so too anon. Perhaps you can suggest a pokestop near where your friends/family live so more pokemon will pop up? Niantic>Pokemon Go>Support. I'm sure there's some graffiti or an interesting telephone pole or tree sculpture you could make the stop

(no joke, up the road we have the "anime telephone pole" pokestop)

I hate to be harsh, but the people who keep demanding that Niantic repurpose the game in a way that makes it playable for people who don't leave their houses get to me. The entire purpose of the game is GPS based locations, it would be like someone asking Nintendo remove battling and trading from the original Pokemon games-- it completely guts the core gameplay. It really does suck if you can't play GO but it shouldn't mean they have to completely rewrite the main game mechanic for you.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
go is destined to be ephemeral so unlike the standard games if you can't play it now it won't be nearly as fun to play in the future

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
The game that eventually replaces Pokemon Go is going to be awesome as fuck.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably because smartphones are ubiquitous and "everyone has one".
Nothing like being asked, by multiple different people, if you're playing a game that wasn't designed for anything you actually own.

When Black and White came out and I didn't have a DS, I was fine with not being able to play them.
I read up on the new Pokémon, people I talked to online carried on as normal, 90% of conversations didn't suddenly revolve around the latest Pokémon game.
The default assumption for "owns a device that plays this game" was "no".

But Go when you don't have a smartphone that supports one (or a smartphone at all)?
Suddenly everyone's talking about this game that you have no way to play, and assuming that you have a way to play it unless you specify otherwise, and it's frustrating.
And, honestly, I'm fucking sick of it. I'm bitter, I'm frustrated, I wish people would shut up about it already. (I wish I could go back to apathy about it.)

The default assumption for "owns a device that plays this game" is now "yes", and that's what makes this different from any other Pokémon game. If only people would realise that not everyone even has a smartphone, some of them by choice. *sigh*

/rant

Also the whining would bother me too. Talking about not being able to play it is still talking about it.

O-Okay...

I agree with the people who say that the default assumption being "everyone can play" is cause for people being upset they can't play.

I don't have a phone for it and I'm not about to drop the money to get one. (I've barely accepted needing a cell phone at all.) I wish I could play, but I realize it's not going to happen any time soon, and I'm OK with that.

OTOH, disabled people have every right to WISH that the game had an "easy" mode so that people with limited mobility could still enjoy this ubiquitous and maybe ephemeral game.

I know some people will say "that's just life get over it," but if you lived with a disability you would get really fed up with having things that everyone else can do (and takes for granted) that you can't and maybe never will be able to do. It gets really fucking old. Yes, sometimes you tell people about it.

And when the default answer is "well I couldn't do ____ because I didn't buy this or that" or "once I was laid up for two weeks so I know how it is" frankly...that sucks. And no, they don't know how it is or they wouldn't say that. :(

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I know I will sound kinda mean here, but the entire point of Pokemon go is to actually go. It is to get out and see different landmarks/locations, meet new people, and get moving. If someone can't leave their house then the game has no purpose for them. If they just want to catch Pokémon, there are a lot of other ways they can do so in othergames. It is understandable that they would be sad they can't join in, but having Nintendo change the game so that no one has to leave their houses would mean that it isn't the same game in the slightest. This is just intrinsically a game that requires leaving the house and there are other game options for people who cannot.

In my case, I want a time machine so that I could experience Gen III when it was fresh and new. Now I can't and not even ORAS could convince me to play the Gen III games. To make up for lost time, I'm playing Pokemon Sapphire on an emulator. While it's not the same as actually being there during the Gen III hype, I think it's enough.

Reason I'm doing this, is because all my friends played it and they're saying how good gens III-VI are good, but I got back into Pokemon late and never got to experience the hype those games got, in order to converse with my friends about them.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so tired of the "They should make a version where you can just sit there and have all the pokemon come to you!!!"
I have mobility issues. This week I went for a walk on Wednesday (flat ground, frequent stops, slow place), and spent Thursday dreading every moment I had to spend standing because my knees were KILLING me. But I play to the best of my abilities, and enjoy the time I get.
Travelling around is an integral part of the game play. It's right there in the name! There are dozens of games with flashing or strobing effects that could incapacitate anyone with even minor epilepsy, or trigger a migraine, and those are just aesthetic. Get on those fuckers to change their games!

No product can be all things to all people. That's not how it works.
