There was this episode in the original series where Spock was playing a space harp and Uhura starting singing and it was so flirty and fun and i was disappointed when it never went any further. So I feel ya.

AH yeah! I always felt like they wanted to go there, but it was still the 60s, and one nonconsensual on both sides interracial kiss was as far as they felt they could go.

but i swear it could have worked and been amazing.

I read something at one point about how Uhura was this initial candidate for the ongoing potentially one-sided romantic interest but they eventually had to give that role to Chapel because [racist production conflicts] but I've never been able to remember the source or how legit it was.

Mind you, I'm actually kind of glad that that they didn't give Uhura a 'pining' plot, even if it was for bad reasons. I'm more comfortable with the idea that there was a bit of attraction between them in TOS that never went anywhere, but which did given the different situation in AOS.

Yeah, I remember that and I really liked this ship in the original, so I quite enjoyed it in the movie too. Unfortunately the brutal Spock/Uhura vs Spock/Kirk ship wars killed both ships for me.

It's not the only scene. There's this in the "Man Trap" where Uhura does seem a little interested:

Mr. Spock: Miss Uhura, your last sub-space log contained an error in the frequencies column.
Uhura: Mr. Spock, sometimes I think if I hear that word 'frequency' once more, I'll cry.
Mr. Spock: Cry?
Uhura: I was just trying to start a conversation.
Mr. Spock: Well, since it is illogical for a communications officer to resent the word 'frequency'... I have no answer.
Uhura: No, you have an answer. I'm an illogical woman, who's beginning to feel too much a part of that communications console. Why don't you tell me I'm an attractive young lady, or ask me if I've ever been in love? Tell me how your planet Vulcan looks on a lazy evening when the moon is full.
Mr. Spock: Vulcan has no moon, Miss Uhura.
Uhura: I'm not surprised, Mr. Spock.

and this in "Who Mourns for Adonais?"

Uhura: Mr. Spock, I haven't done anything like this in years. If it isn't done just right, I could blow the entire communications system. It's very delicate work, sir.
Spock: I can think of no one better equipped to handle it, Miss Uhura. Please, proceed.

for Spock that's high praise indeed, and she does smile at him.

Not a lot, but there is a number of small scenes. I found this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fK3Fc14xOu8

I've yet to see a Zachary Quinto het romance/sex scene that convinced me.

Cause everyone knows the gays can't pretend to like ladies.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, one actor = all gay actors.

Try harder, troll.

Gene Roddenberry wanted a Spock/Uhura storyline, but Shatner said he wanted to be the one to kiss her in the episode.

And the Mirrorverse was born.

...what?

The mirrorverse had nothing to do with that kiss.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Debatable. I've heard it's the executives who wanted to change the original Kirk/Uhura kiss to a Spock/Uhura kiss because they felt it would be less controversial for Uhura to kiss an alien while Kirk would kiss Chapel. Shatner insisted that he kiss Uhura though and kept messing up the non-kiss takes. I mean, Chapel had a crush on Spock, it doesn't make much sense for Chapel to kiss Kirk.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-24 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
That's actually what I've heard too, not the other story.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked it in the first movie because there was this element of mystery.
I saw the new one last night and they were kind of cute but I don't even know what their plotline was supposed to be. clueless guy offending his sensitive girlfriend? again? ugh.

And here I thought they had broken up on good terms for what seemed a valid reason and she was obviously unhappy but handling it with a lot of grace. I'm always bored with the pairing but AFAIK it wasn't really a redundant conflict.

Same, I've got a few misgivings about the new movies but I love these two.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I could have seen it with Leonard Nimoy and Nichelle Nichols, but I'm just not feeling it with Quinto and Saldana.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Same.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sad that Nichelle wasn't the one kissing Leonard in "Plato's Stepchildren". :(

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I love the concept of Spock/Uhura and I've enjoyed fics that feature the pairing but I found the execution of it in the reboot movies to just be kind of bad tbh. It's just not written very well

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Actually, the Spock/Uhura ship was more or less the only thing I like about the reboot.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-24 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I came out of the 2009 shipping it hard. So hard. Looked to fandom (as one does) and wow, the Spock/Uhura fandom is/was toxic as fuck. And every so often i go back to check in because I'm reminded of the pairing, and yep same bullshit.

I've always rolled my eyes at the whole 'fans ruined the pairing for me!' thing, but i get it. (still ship it, but if i can't engage with the fandom then it's hard to keep the excitement levels up)
