Personal finance. Budgets, taxes, how to save for retirement.

Ooh, this. I actually had to take a personal finance class in high school. It was a kind of remedial math class and I've never loved a math class as much as I loved that one. I liked it because it was "real world" math and I could easily see how I might use it in the future. It helped me budget during college and figure out interest rates and things like that. I could never figure out why it was a remedial class instead of a mandatory one.

Definitely. In sixth grade math, we learned how to write checks (because people do that so often now) and balance a checkbook and a bit about budgeting and how interest works. There totally should have been something in high school that covers taxes and retirement savings, though. Should be a requirement for graduation. Then there should be another version of it you have to take if you attend any kind of college or technical school or do an apprenticeship or join the military or whatever. The college one should be soon before graduation so everything is fresh in your mind as you ate turned loose in the world.

My Mum used to be a Home Economics teacher and basically that course covered exactly this. She taught basic bookkeeping, and covered budgeting and taxes.

Mum has also just said some of the Woodworking teachers also taught Home Ecc. principals, because boys gravitated to that while girls went to Home Ecc. (Mum taught from the 60s to 80s, so the gender divide was still very obvious).
