What class do you think should be taught in all schools?

Either for your country or everywhere.

Nothing they could teach well enough to be worth it.

Personal finance. Budgets, taxes, how to save for retirement.

Ooh, this. I actually had to take a personal finance class in high school. It was a kind of remedial math class and I've never loved a math class as much as I loved that one. I liked it because it was "real world" math and I could easily see how I might use it in the future. It helped me budget during college and figure out interest rates and things like that. I could never figure out why it was a remedial class instead of a mandatory one.

Re: What class do you think should be taught in all schools?

Definitely. In sixth grade math, we learned how to write checks (because people do that so often now) and balance a checkbook and a bit about budgeting and how interest works. There totally should have been something in high school that covers taxes and retirement savings, though. Should be a requirement for graduation. Then there should be another version of it you have to take if you attend any kind of college or technical school or do an apprenticeship or join the military or whatever. The college one should be soon before graduation so everything is fresh in your mind as you ate turned loose in the world.

My Mum used to be a Home Economics teacher and basically that course covered exactly this. She taught basic bookkeeping, and covered budgeting and taxes.

Mum has also just said some of the Woodworking teachers also taught Home Ecc. principals, because boys gravitated to that while girls went to Home Ecc. (Mum taught from the 60s to 80s, so the gender divide was still very obvious).

Home economics because most people my ages don't know how to take care of themselves. I've seen people wash clothes in the dorms without using any detergent, and I've seen people not know how to bake something from a box properly. And that's really stupid and really sad. People need to know the basics by the time they're in college.

Anthropology, including an introduction to how we really do linguistics and history.

And in the United States, a full section for post-WWII history.

Religious Studies. But only as a secular class, obviously - not like Sunday school. But learning about the origins and typical beliefs as well as common conflicts of all the world's major religions seems important to me, because interacting with people from different cultures, religions, and backgrounds is an important skill.

I live in Belgium and graduated in 2002, so I don't know how relevant this is but:

- 20th century history. I don't know how it's done elsewhere, but here we start with dinosaurs in our first year of junior high and then move through history until our senior year when we got to WWI. We did that and then I thought we'd finally get to what I'd consider to be the most interesting part, except we barely skimmed it. Instead we got a bunch of boring political stuff about NATO and the EU and the UN. I think. I honestly think they expect us to learn about 20th century history from documentaries and whatever our parents tell us.

- How to Adult. It's a stupid phrase but it is a fitting description. Basically it's a bunch of other stuff they expect you to get from your parents. Not all parents are fit teachers, or (as in my case) they die before anyone thinks of this stuff. But simple cooking, cleaning, sewing, home repair. Basic financial stuff like bills and taxes. Maybe some things about health, like what are some basic things you always need to stock.

- Computer classes. I learned some binary and made a light blink in junior high, and got to play around with an Excel sheet for a bit. That's it. Considering how freaking important computers are today, I feel woefully under-equipped. Kids should know different operating systems, every trick for MS Office and some coding.

First and foremost, we need to start TEACHING in schools. America is seriously fucked in the education department.

That out of the way, here's what I wish they'd teach:

Nutrition. Yes, I'm American. Obesity is a problem in my country. If we at LEAST teach kids how to eat properly, maybe it won't be as bad.

Etiquette. When you actually have to REMIND people to be a decent human being, you know something has to be done and fast.

Proper Sex Ed. No "Girls only learn about vaginas, boys only learn about penises" (Yes, that happened to me) Both sexes learn about how both parts work. Also, proper birth control and STD prevention. Abstinence does jack shit.

Consumer Math and Financial Management. Learn how too add how much money you have, and how much you need to subtract in order to live.

"How To Function in Real Life." Teaching skills like how to cook basic foods like rice and pasta, how to properly wash your clothes, how to find the best deals while shopping, how to manage bank accounts, etc.

Life skills -- with units on:

how to manage your finances
how to keep your home clean
how to take care of your health
how to handle your transportation (maintain a car, navigate buses and trains, read a map)
how to handle conflict
how to cope with loss
how to define and maintain boundaries
how to care for pets
how to care for children
basic etiquette

Macroeconomics would probably help, in any country that has democracy. Too many people think it's the same as microeconomics or finance, just scaled up. And that's really not the case.

Economics with a focus on personal finance.

And more importantly: Critical thinking.

As others have said, a Home Economics class that gives kids decent practical life skills, because not every kid has parents who can teach them, and it will make their lives easier as they try to get through college and get a job if they know the basics of taking care of themselves.

Everyone can do with understanding how to boil water in a sauce pan, how to read a recipe, how to make a basic balanced meal. Everyone can do with the knowledge of how to budget, and how to manage credit cards and taxes.

Hell, if schools gave a session on writing basic resumes for kids looking to get part-time jobs, that would be great too!

Also I feel schools should balance technical and practical. It would be kinda daft for a student to have huge amounts of theory but still not know how to actually do anything!

I think a basic sign language course would be a really good idea.
