Re: What class do you think should be taught in all schools?

First and foremost, we need to start TEACHING in schools. America is seriously fucked in the education department.

That out of the way, here's what I wish they'd teach:

Nutrition. Yes, I'm American. Obesity is a problem in my country. If we at LEAST teach kids how to eat properly, maybe it won't be as bad.

Etiquette. When you actually have to REMIND people to be a decent human being, you know something has to be done and fast.

Proper Sex Ed. No "Girls only learn about vaginas, boys only learn about penises" (Yes, that happened to me) Both sexes learn about how both parts work. Also, proper birth control and STD prevention. Abstinence does jack shit.

Consumer Math and Financial Management. Learn how too add how much money you have, and how much you need to subtract in order to live.

"How To Function in Real Life." Teaching skills like how to cook basic foods like rice and pasta, how to properly wash your clothes, how to find the best deals while shopping, how to manage bank accounts, etc.

If you're going around reminding people to be decent, I daresay you could use a lesson in etiquette, too.

*sigh*

I don't literally do that. That was a slight exaggeration of what I've seen happening around me, or you know, when someone runs into you and saying "excuse you too."

Now, do you have anything productive to add, or is this conversation over?

No, I agree about the rest. :)

I agree with all of this.

I grew up with reasonably basic cooking classes, which did include nutrition (which I give credit to it being a church school, and my church having a strong belief in healthy living), but I will add a point that it should not go too heavy on the theoretical nutritional details, and have a good substantial practical requirement.

I think financial management is a good idea too, and the idea of abstinence sex ed bemuses me in a "Do they really think that does anything?" way.
