for vintage lovers

What's your favorite and least favorite decade in fashion? Why?

Re: for vintage lovers

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The 90s were bad. The 80s at least had over the top drama. The 90s were just bad.

You must really be hating current trends.

Favorite is the 70s

Re: for vintage lovers

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the 70s! Do you have a favorite trend of the 70s? I'm rather fascinated by the jumper dresses with the billowy sleeve blouses underneath.

Re: for vintage lovers

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
With all possible respect, I could not disagree more. The 70s are the decade aesthetics forgot. Everything was safety orange, puke green, or shit brown, in corduroy or plaid if possible. And if they weren't those, they were fucking paisley. And that's just discussing color and fabric, never mind the goddamn collars, lapels, and everything else about the fashion of that godforsaken decade.

40s for guys - I like the buttoned-up look and the classic hair cuts they had going
30s/40s for ladies - not so much the hair styles but I like the way the dresses looked a little more comfortable but still looked classy

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
The 40s are my favorite for similar reasons - practical styles but with interesting details and a focus on great accessories.

50s because of poofy skirts and corsets!

Re: for vintage lovers

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh yes! I also like the bad girl look from the 50s - you know, the cigarette pants with the skintight sweaters.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the tight fifties skirts better than the poofy ones.

80s is the worst. I think my favorite is a toss up between 60s and 70s.

Re: for vintage lovers

(Anonymous) 2016-07-22 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It really is. The 80s were obviously inspired by 40s silhouettes, but they just went completely over the top with it. And the hair, my god.

Fav- the 1920's. Love those flappers. Gals with the boyish charm. What a dramatic new style. Look at those gams.

Re: for vintage lovers

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
That's one decade I could never pull off with my proportionally gargantuan hipline, but I love the way it looks on others! And I really like the short, wavy hair and almost clownlike makeup of the 20s.

Re: for vintage lovers

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Love flapper fashion but I'm much too voluptuous to look good in it. Flappers were skinny.

Re: for vintage lovers

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I like the Fifties because the outfits and hairstyles are really cute. I'm not a big fan of the Twenties, mainly because I could never pull off the flapper silhouette.

The 50s have near universal appeal, I think.

Favorite period is the 1930s, because I love the Art Deco aesthetic
Least favorite is the 1980s, because fashion was dire

30s probably wins for me too, for exactly that reason, though I actually like the 80s as well. They have nostalgia value to me if nothing else.

Favorite would be 60s and 70s.

Least favorite would probably be the late 90s-early 00s.

I think people are experiencing some selectively flattering memories/conception of the 70s:

http://www.lileks.com/institute/70s/sears1973/index.html

http://www.metv.com/stories/11-extremely-seventies-pages-from-the-1975-sears-catalog

Okay, seriously, I actually think the 70s had a lot of cuts that were really flattering for both men and women, although the colors and a lot of the fabrics were terrible (I confess I do like corduroy, though) and they really needed to reign in the collars. I love boot-cut jeans but not extreme bellbottoms.

I find women's fashions from the 1910s, 1920s, and 1950s nice to look at, but I'm glad I don't have to dress like that, since I'm too skinny to pull off 1910s and 1950s and not skinny enough for 1920s. Those decades went for relatively extreme body types, which is why the fashions have an aesthetic appeal, but don't flatter a lot of bodies (and didn't at the timne, either).

I like the 60s, but I know from stuff Mum has said that fashions then were so universal there was no wiggle room. Also, massive amounts of hairspray.

The fashions I really hate are the late 70s clothing, and 80s hair. I don't mind 80s clothing but the big, teased, permed hair was dire, and mullets are terrible.

I think I will say my favourite era is always now, but I would especially like to say that when fashion stopped being homogeneous and different fashions could exist concurrently was the best turn to ever happen.

Favorites: 30s and 40s, 80s and 90s 'subculture' stuff like cybergoth or new wave rockstar makeup on dudes

Least favs: 20s, 50s-70s

Re: for vintage lovers

I'm very fond of the 1950s, partly because the full skirts are fun and one of the few things that I find flattering.
I detest down to the depths of my soul the 1830s. Ugly, ugly, ugly clothes; ugly, ugly, ugly hair. Just dreadful.
