(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 07:25 am (UTC)(link)If you can't or down't want to download the games, there are a few alternative ways to get the gist of the story (be aware that the movie vesion of the events takes into account the several retcons the lore has undergone since 1994, and made some changes of its own to the official game lore as it currently stands.):
For the first two games, just reading the backstory from their respective manuals will give you plenty. The story within the games was mostly displayed in the form of scrolling text before and after playing a campaign, so there's no real character interaction for you to miss.
Warcraft: Orcs and Humans (http://wow.gamepedia.com/Warcraft:_Orcs_%26_Humans_manual)
Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness (http://wow.gamepedia.com/Warcraft_II:_Tides_of_Darkness_manual)
Warcraft 2 expansion pack: Beyond the Dark Portal (http://wow.gamepedia.com/Warcraft_II:_Beyond_the_Dark_Portal_manual)
Warcraft 3: Reigns of Chaos, and Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne were more character-driven, and the hero units would often have conversations during gameplay, so most of the story is in there. This video contains all the cutscenes and cinematics, though it does omit some incidental conversations that relate to the current map rather than the plot (things like characters remarking that the mechanism to open a door must be somewhere nearby, or someone noticing that something is off moments before being ambushed by enemy units):

Then there are the official novels. I think the RTS games are mostly covered in Rise of the Horde, The Last Guardian, and Lord of the Clans. World of Warcraft: Chronicle Volume 1, which came out earlier this year, offers the most comprehensive and up-to-date view of the major lore up to The Last Guardian, even including brand new information abut the history of the world.
Finally, there are always WoWWiki and Wowpedia, as well as the youtube channel Nobbel87 https://www.youtube.com/user/Nobbel87 who specializes in videos explaining chunks of the story.
The Warcraft lore is as fascinating as it is a mess of retcons and contradictions, and no one fan remembers every piece of it - and Blizzard definitely doesn't. So don't sweat it too much if it all seems too complicated.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)If you enjoyed clicking on your units in the Warcraft games, there's an early Horde quest in WoW where you have to hit lazy peons to wake them up and get them back to work; the dialog is really familiar.
