Meanwhile my sister-in-law and her partner are barely scraping by and paying ACA fines.

Need to start campaigning for a healthcare system driven by tax funding then.

That's never going to happen.

I'm glad you're alive, though.

If our healthcare system is always going to be fundamentally fucked and broken and profit-driven and exploitative, then you're always going to face this kind of Scylla and Charybdis. Because as long as a system of that kind is going to be your only real option for obtaining healthcare, improving access to the healthcare system necessarily entails exposing more people to its bullshit fucked-upness.

So, I mean, if it's never going to happen, we're just choosing between modes of fuckedness either way, and I think there's a strong case for the mode of fuckedness that at least makes sure everyone is covered on some level.

NAYRT, but I cannot understand how the United States can be one of the richest nations on earth, and yet still have one of the worst health care systems. Back in the day, yeah, but now there's the Internet, and you KNOW better stuff is out there. I just don't get why it's so impossible to change.

Because Americans are so terrified of paying for someone's birth control, someone's obesity-related health issues, someone's smoking-related health issues, etc., that they'd rather not pay for anyone's anything.
