I've been considering moving to Grand Rapids if I can't move to the PNW. I think you'll find it's very pedastrian and bike friendly and is a very different place from eastern Michigan.

Grand Rapids seems lovely, it just wasn't large enough to be a part of the datasets I was using. Major cities, 200k+ residents only. Sorry, should probably have been clear about that.

I imagine there's probably quite a few spots below that line that have those characteristics and it's definitely a good area for further research.

The bigger the city the more expensive it'll be, unfortunately. Especially if it's a particularly central location, like a major port city (coastal cities in general are expensive just for the real estate) or occupies an important spot on highway or rail lines.

Sure, sure! It's not meant to be an exclusive list of good places to live by any means. Just places that hit specific criteria. I'm sorry if it came off that way.
