(Anonymous) 2016-07-24 12:57 am (UTC)(link)If anything the most relevant comparison you have here - IMO - is the Democratic Party from the end of the Civil War through World War 2. When they were a really loose collection of disparate interest groups more united by anti-Republicanism than anything else, deeply regional, often tied to particular party bosses and factions, consistently unable to unify around a candidate.
And they only won a handful of elections during that period, but they still stuck together as a party, and then FDR figured out how to accomplish a fundamental ideological re-orentation of the party and there was a massive crisis of American politics and Bob's your uncle.
So, in other words: I think as long as the Republican Party is capable of winning House and Senate seats, and governorships, and state legislatures, they're probably going to stick around. Not necessarily be very well organized, but they're not going away.
