At the risk of sounding like Ugly Anon, I'm going to say that, eh, she looks pretty average to me? Not unattractive, but not drop dead gorgeous. I actually like it better that way, because it says to me that Tolkien loved her for herself and in his eyes, that transformed her into a Luthien-like beauty. I've noticed that's often how love works in real life. Your love for someone is what makes them beautiful to you, not necessarily their awesome cheekbones or pretty eyes or what have you.
