I enjoyed the movies and the anime as a kid, but it's very clear that Ash is just a simple character who never grows up so that he will always appeal to a G-rated audience.

It would be interesting to see a more mature take on pokemon seeing as how the kids that grew up with it are 20+ age range now. Kinda like how the Harry Potter books got increasingly more mature and dangerous, and you could see Harry going through the usual teenager stuff but still remaining a kid friendly story.
