Star Trek Beyond

Just saw Star Trek Beyond on Saturday and it was way more entertaining than I was expecting! I think the reeboot movies are going the opposite way of the original/TNG movies and the odd ones are the good ones (although I didn't really dislike Into Darkness, just liked it less - I guess time and more movied will tell). I loved that they gave Chekhov decent screentime, even it wasn't an intentional reaction to Yelchin's death. I loved the lady with the black stripes. I still love Scotty and his wee hetero life partner.

I loved how when Spock gets hurt, McCoy doesn't miss a beat and keeps grumping and complaining while fashioning a way to cauterize the wound without pause to think about what to do or narration of what he's doing. Also, there's something kind of precious about Spock saying "horse shit."

Having Idrus Elba as a rogue Federation captain of the USS Franklin from the ST:Enterprise era who is kept alive by alien tech to be the villain is kinda bullshit though.

I found his backstory kind of irrelevant. A good thing in the sense that you don't really have to pay attention to it, but a bad thing in the sense that it feels tacked-on.

I like a lot about the movie but the plot was total bullshit.
Kirk was great, pairing Spock and McCoy was fun and interesting, Jayla was cute, that space station was sooo gorgeous and I almost want to watch it again not in 3D so I actually SEE IT (I hate 3D, but that's another rant)
But it's a mysterious powerful alien with a grudge against the federation? Oh and he's got a mysterious CGI superweapon? The first movie did both of those things better.
Actually I had a similar beef with Civil War. I feel like I'm missing something because I just don't think "needlessly complex symbolic revenge because ?????" is a story I can give a shit about and it's like movies don't care about making sense anymore.

Simon Pegg publicly bitched that paramount wouldn't let him write anything complex in case the audiences couldn't understand it.

It was surprisingly really good! I really enjoyed it. And the Spones. Oh the Spones
