I like a lot about the movie but the plot was total bullshit.
Kirk was great, pairing Spock and McCoy was fun and interesting, Jayla was cute, that space station was sooo gorgeous and I almost want to watch it again not in 3D so I actually SEE IT (I hate 3D, but that's another rant)
But it's a mysterious powerful alien with a grudge against the federation? Oh and he's got a mysterious CGI superweapon? The first movie did both of those things better.
Actually I had a similar beef with Civil War. I feel like I'm missing something because I just don't think "needlessly complex symbolic revenge because ?????" is a story I can give a shit about and it's like movies don't care about making sense anymore.

Simon Pegg publicly bitched that paramount wouldn't let him write anything complex in case the audiences couldn't understand it.
