Too many more recent writers don't realize you can write history without romance being the central plot.

Or maybe - GASP - they just like romance!

More like they've glommed onto the idea of historical fiction being all about romance from the success of Outlander and are unable to think outside their superficial understanding of the genre.

But how do you know they don't like romance

True of all genres.

I don't mind romance, and I don't mind writers including romance if they like. But so often, romance plots seem... slapped on. As though the author just assumes a romance subplot is obligatory.

AYRT - Fair enough! I do like romance subplots, and I even like romance period. But not everything has to be.

You could try historical mysteries. Unless they're doing it wrong, the central plot should be a mystery.

I'd be happier if more writers quit injecting romance into every genre as if it's ticking a box. It'd be different if they did a good job of it or if the romance felt like a natural extension of the plot, but often it feels awkwardly included as filler.
