Only tangentially related I suppose, but "smugness" and "snideness" are nail on the head reasons why I started to find Sherlock so unbearable by the end of s3. Also, call me crazy, but I thought Richie's version did okay.

Ha, no crazy-calling from me; I loved the Ritchie Holmes.

I was sick of it by season two. Plus they just don't fit my vision of the characters at all. I don't see Watson as a beleaguered friend rolling his eyes in the background while Sherlock acts like a smug asshole.

The smugness is why I stopped watching Sherlock. That, and they weren't as clever as they thought they were.

I liked Sherlock in the beginning, too, but the problem is the writing is not as smart as it thinks it is.

I find this true for basically everything Moffat writes :X

You might be right.

Exactly--and it thinks it's REALLY smart.

(Also: hi!)

(Anonymous) 2016-07-25 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think that describes it well. It's entertaining and funny, but not as clever as the writers seem to believe. Sometimes the self-congratulatory attitude of this show gets to me.

Yes. I mean, it's decent writing, but the smugness about it is sometimes borderline embarrassing.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-25 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
The smug/snide quality of Sherlock was a big turn off for me, too. But I felt that way long before season three ended.

I did enjoy how it went in Guy Richie's, yeah-- I mean, sure, it was... supremely different from canon, but it was done beautifully.

My ultimate Holmes/ Watson tag team would be Jeremy Brett and Jude Law. Out of everyone, they embody my personal vision of the characters the most perfectly.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-25 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked the version of the Reichenbach scene in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, myself.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-26 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with all of this.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-26 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
The Brett version was pretty straightforward.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-26 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
A smart series would play the scene basically as written, except that the death takes.

I liked the movie version. *shrug*
