writing thread

Ever write something and be like "if you motherfuckers don't cry at the line, I have absolutely failed"? And then 2 seconds later wondered if it was too subtle and you needed to point a neon sign at it?

I'm sticking with the subtle approach and just hoping someone comments on it.

I hate when people do that.

It's not like I put cry-ability above all the other facets of storytelling, but sometimes something is just sad if you think about it and you want people to see what you put into it.

In this instance a callback to a reference that used to be said cruelly now being utterly sincere.

Hate... what? Writers wanting to provoke emotions on their readers? Isn't that the whole point of reading?

Have some confidence in your readers. I mean, it'll probably be misplaced confidence, but your writing will be better.

ALWAYS err on the side of subtlety.

Not really, but then I tend to provide multiple crying opportunities.

Have faith in your readers! Or, if it's, like, really subtle (like idk character A is making a reference to something character B said a long time ago and it's sad in context or w/e), maybe go back and sew in a few more references or hints earlier in the story?

I don't think I've EVER cried while reading something someone else wrote. Then again, I don't tend to usually gravitate towards 'heartstring tugging' type fiction.

So if an author put their stock as a writer in evoking tears from me... sorry?

Man, Jim Butcher once made me cry over the death of a character I didn't even like. I don't normally cry at books, either (movies and TV shows will get to me), but damn, dude.

If it's the same character death I'm thinking of, I cried too. (Thinking all the while WHAT THE HECK I DON'T EVEN LIKE THIS GUY!)

Yup.

But then I think of myself as the reader. I know in a fic if someone points a neon sign at a Big Moment, I tend to roll my eyes instead of have a true gut reaction. Kind of like someone holding up an "Applause" sign. I'm trying to get one of the people I beta for out of the neon sign habit, but it's slow going.

So keep on with the subtlety, my friend. It works out better in the end.

When there's something important that the reader needs to know, I have a bad habit of putting it in a single sentence and not drawing any attention to it. I think that's part of why my stories are too short--every line means something, and nothing is wasted. Some folks say my stories encourage rereading, while others just say I'm unnecessarily confusing.

Then again, To Kill a Mockingbird only needed two easily-missed sentences, never brought up again, to reveal that the villain molests his daughter. That still blows me away all these years later.
