TV Shows

So...I feel like an ass because I only gave it two episodes, but does Stranger Things get really amazing somewhere later in the season or something? Because my friendslist seems to love it and keeps comparing it to things like Silent Hill, but I found the first episodes to be really derivative and boring. The 80s flair is nice and the acting is good, but everything seems extremely formulaic, the characters all seem like archetypes, and it's not scary at all. I wonder if I'm missing something, or if it's simply not my taste.
I started watching Mr Robot recently though, and I really love it. Talk about other shows if you want!

It's a really well-executed and emotionally grounded take on a genre that a lot of people love and that we don't see around as much anymore.

I would definitely say it's more Stephen King than Silent Hill, though.

I guess some people enjoy the nostalgia-fest? I really liked it. Mr Robot, however, I find irritatingly pretentious. Different strokes I guess.

Mr. Robot is this generation's Fight Club.

In the sense that both are smarter and more self-aware than most people, including their fans, give them credit for?

As in ten years from now, posters of Mr. Robot will be coating the dorm rooms of the "cool kids". And you will want to avoid the people who talk about how it is the greatest thing in the world and you just don't understand it because you are too mainstream.

Oh I agree the fan bases are stupid in very similar ways. It just bugs me because I feel like those are egregious misinterpretations of the actual things.

Mr Robot is aware enough of its own pretentiousness for me, and kinda undermines it by having an unreliable narrator, but yeah, I can see how it could be annoying. It probably really is different strokes, then. I also think I expected something different from Stranger Things based on the descriptions, like more mind-bending horror I guess, so maybe people oversold it to me.

It's totally derivative all the way through, but it's well made, decently acted, very suspenseful, and fun to watch.

If you can't let go of the fact that it's more of a pastiche of a number of different movies both stylistically and thematically with some scenes that directly homage after the first two episodes and enjoy it, it's probably not for you.

Haven't tried it, but...

Is it fun for the 80'sishness or the similarities to The X Files?

It's not actually very X-Files at all. IMO anyway. Plot wise, aesthetically, it just comes from a very different place. The whole texture and atmosphere and pace is different. Just because something is creepy and unexplained in the past doesn't make it x files.

AYRT - Really? I heard it touted as the new X-Files. Though really, I should know better, when the LOTR movies were coming out people said they were just like Harry Potter.
