Medication can be extremely dangerous, not just because of addiction, but because of interactions and dosages.

Pain, no matter how awful it is, is not dangerous. Sorry, but I would a) stick it out and b) keep bothering them for a prescription change.

Also, if insurance/resources allow for it, try to find another doctor?

(I'll also disagree that pain isn't ever dangerous but in many cases it is not)
