Re: Awkward Questions

How bad is it to use someone else's pain pill? On day 5 of a migraine, went to urgent care, they wouldn't give me anything stronger than ibuprofen. My primary care wont' change my prescription either. A family member offered me a tilenol with codein, and I'm really tempted to take it.

Look, I get that drug addiction is a big problem right now. But pain is a problem too. And it is so frustrating that doctors are so skiddish right now that they won't give stuff even when it is actually needed. And I need to sleep. I need to function.

It's potentially very harmful to you since the dose is not regulated for you needs and your body, and you don't know how it will interact with other foods and medication you have already consumed.

Eh. If you don't got any allergies or medication that would interact badly, should be fine to take one.

This assumes OP knows about all their allergies and possible drug interactions, though. Most non medical professionals don't, which is why it's not recommended that you take someone else's prescription meds.

most doctors don't test for allergies unless you show a reaction to something tho

To me if you have taken the meds in the past and now how you react to it and that it doesn't cause problems with other things you take. Go for it.

If it is a complete unknown there are a lot of risk factors like a bad allergic reaction ect and would be best to avoid it.

Medication can be extremely dangerous, not just because of addiction, but because of interactions and dosages.

Pain, no matter how awful it is, is not dangerous. Sorry, but I would a) stick it out and b) keep bothering them for a prescription change.

Also, if insurance/resources allow for it, try to find another doctor?

(I'll also disagree that pain isn't ever dangerous but in many cases it is not)

Be really careful with codeine.

Personally, codeine is amazing for me, so ymmv. It's the thing that actually WORKS without having to take more thn the recommended dose.

Oh yeah but you do have to be careful--worked like a charm for me before giving me vivid and terrifying hallucinations, so I always recommend caution.

Wow. No, to me it's like a very mild, mellow, evenly distributed painkiller.

Wow, humans are pretty different.

Also, hi!

When I took codeine I had the most vivid lucid dream of my life. It was pretty amazing. Kind of lucky it only happened the once, tbh - I've never been tempted by drugs before.

Percocet gave me lucid dreams. Codeine just made me hear awful shit.

I've never taken pain pills w/o a prescription myself. Just the owner of a consistently fucked-up body.

Oh jeez, we hallucinated on codeine too! (which was uh, also given to us as a child by a relative whose perscription it was.)

Thankfully not scary hallucinations, but still, rather trippy.

Oh god, seconding. Codeine gave me the worst time on drugs I've ever had. 12 hours of vague nausea, paranoia, and vivid nightmares whenever I did try to sleep.

Well, if you have a true migraine, most traditional pain pills are not prescribed because they do nothing and opiates can actually make it worse. You need to go to an ER for some kind of triptan.

Re: Awkward Questions

(Anonymous) 2016-07-26 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
This. Pain pills won't help a genuine migraine; you need something that will actually act on the blood vessels that are causing it. (I say this from experience.)

I know with my migraines, if I don't catch it before the pain starts, triptans will do somewhere between jack and shit.

Don't take your relative's painkillers. Do go to your regular pharmacy and see about getting an OTC dose of something stronger than the on-the-shelf painkillers. They'll be able to look up your information and make sure they're not giving you anything that will have a negative interaction with your current medication or any logged allergies, and you won't be setting a bad mental precedent for yourself.
