What is a great compliment you have received?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-25 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily even the nicest or highest compliment you've received....just one compliment that really tickled you or made you feel really good or makes you smile whenever you think about it?

Mine is, "Girl, there's nothing wrong with you a shower won't fix." It was just the perfect thing to say to me at that moment.

I was having a bad day in the middle of my first year of law school. I didn't do well on my midterm. And then a random professor was with me in the elevator and told me I was going to make a great lawyer some day. That just made me feel so much better.

I'm going to give two, because I'm not sure the second one was even really meant to be a compliment.

First one was in middle school. We had to write a story for our exam using a particular narrative technique. A few days (?) later, my teacher stopped me in the middle of the hall in front of everyone to tell me that my story was the best thing he'd ever read and since it was also grammatically flawless, he had wanted to give it a perfect score. I freaking adored that teacher and was pretty proud of my writing even then, so that compliment, in front of loads of people...Made my day.

Second one was more recent. The context is weird and I'm not sure if it's relevant, but basically my brother told me I had 'never been very sensitive to peer pressure' (in general, but especially compared to him, I think). As I said, I'm not sure he was trying to give me a compliment, but I loved hearing that.

My favorite comment on my writing was from my honors English professor who told me I had a strong voice that was all my own.

It's not so much a compliment as encouragement, but I was in the elevator going up to work with an old man who I had been making elevator-small-talk with, and when I got out on my floor he said "Go get 'em, tiger!" It legit made my day because it was so unexpected but also exactly what I needed that morning.

"You're so full of light...really, you're luminous." -- in context, it came out of nowhere and was kind of an odd thing to say, but it made me feel good so I'll take it. :)

"I look forward to reading your poems each week....they make me feel like I'm stepping into another world." -- college Creative Writing professor.

One of my coworkers remarked that he always loved seeing me in the morning because I always have a smile on my face and greet him happily in the morning.

My favourite compliment was from a former principal of mine. She's one of those women that is ALWAYS put together and has shoes that cost more than my bi-weekly car payments. But she was a good admin and loved the kids (and later went on to become our board's first female superintendent of schools).

The school we worked at was brand new, so there were a few Occupational Health & Safety issues that we had write letters to various board/building company officials about--I was the secretary for our OH&S committee. After one of the letters I wrote, she said, "You write wicked letters." Pause. "And I mean that in a good way!" It was the second part that killed me--it still makes me laugh.

I was walking down a street in Gibraltar, and a gentlemen in a suit, who was much older than I was, walked past and said, "Looking great" and gave me a thumbs-up. I was just dressed in jeans and a t-shirt and jacket, but the way he said it was like he was seeing a beautiful woman. I have never been comfortable about my looks or my body shape, but that compliment was so sweet that it made my entire vacation.

Somebody did a podfic of one of my stories and in the notes went on and on about how reading it over several times to get the intonations right brought her to appreciating all the subtleties of the prose So Much More and and and...

Did a glorious job of the reading, too.

"He doesn't like you because on some level he senses that if women knew men like you exist, men like him would never have sex."

Aww, these are all sweet. Mine was "You're a natural. So fucking calm." about me doing something utterly mundane, but it was under water and in the dark and my little teenage heart appreciated it so much. And it stayed with me, unlike plenty of other, more traditional compliments.

Some classmates at university told me over lunch that I always seem so competent. For me, a person of not too great self-esteem (and with a huge competency kink /cough), that was a really great compliment.

And an unspoken one was during a time I was practising with a friend for a music event with a small band (for church, which was weird because I'm not religious but I did it as a favour for my music teacher). We were supposed to share a song and I had the first verse+chorus and when it was her turn, my friend didn't start singing. Turns out she completely forgot abour her part because she thought my part had been so beautiful. That was a great feeling.
