Didn't they also replace authentic Chinese writing in the show with scribbles that looked Chinese to American audiences? That always undermined their authenticity argument in the pronunciation of the names for me.

I hadn't heard that, and knowing nothing about the controversy, could it have just been intended to diminish the presence of "real" cultures and refashion it as pure fantasy?

I wouldn't mind that but the argument for changing the pronunciation of the names was that it was how the names are properly pronounced in the real languages they were influenced by. Just seems inconsistent to me. I'm a nitpicker though.
