Shame he wasn't, you know, actually Asian then. But nothing could have saved that movie.

Really. That's enough for the movie to be a disaster

ETA: to clarify, casting a white cast. Nope, that's dumb, I'm out.

I don't think they all have to be Asian? they weren't all based on Asian cultures, were they?

Even if Aang alone had been white it wouldn't bother me that much because his character *looks* white in the show (I know, he's not). but all of them? really?

I liked the movie. *shrug* Even if I was a bit 'eh?' around the casting choices. I don't feel like it was a BAD movie.

I definitely could have handled the name changes if they hadn't steamrolled over everything else.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-27 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
This! (also as Kallanda says above, if the actors were asian)

I feel like if it had been a good movie, changing the name pronunciations to something more accurately asian would have been fine and maybe even a perk. But it was a bad, white washed, empty shell of a flick, so instead its just another detail from the show the creators changed

Don't care. It's a fantasy film and they fucked over everything. Yes, even the names.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-27 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
That's how you say it when you're speaking English. Pronouncing things exactly the same as you would in their original language makes you sound like a pretentious douche.

And it's a fictional language in this case anyway, so you can't say with proof that those letters don't make that sound in it.

I'm imagining an American movie set in fantasy France where they keep calling the main character "JACK-quehz" and it's making me lol forever

If there is a specific English equivalent for say, place names, that's once thing. But people's names? If you insist on mangling them on purpose, the douche is you.

Didn't they also replace authentic Chinese writing in the show with scribbles that looked Chinese to American audiences? That always undermined their authenticity argument in the pronunciation of the names for me.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-27 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Wow...

(Anonymous) 2016-07-27 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I hadn't heard that, and knowing nothing about the controversy, could it have just been intended to diminish the presence of "real" cultures and refashion it as pure fantasy?

That's actually something that bugs me in a lot of fantasy with made-up names and terms - they're so often obviously meant to be pronounced with an American accent, even though the way Americans (and the English language in general) pronounce vowels especially is pretty different from the way most other languages pronounce them (e.g. "ae" instead of "ah"). It would make far more sense for fantasy languages *not* to be pronounced with American vowels. It throws me out of the story a little when that happens.

So yeah, agreed OP - "Aang" should have been pronounced that way, but that movie (WHAT MOVIE IT DOESN'T EXIST) was a total disaster :/

But no.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-27 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hang on. "Most Asians" use a completely different alphabet/writing system. And most Asian languages are largely independent of one another, there is NO generalization that can fairly be made here.

The director, who himself is Asian, took creative license with the pronunciation to make it sound like what he believed would be more Asian. I agree he's wrong to do so - there was no need for it, because it wasn't based off of any existing language/culture/real life place. But at least he was Asian and made that call with good intentions.

And on an unrelated note, while this film was awful and the whitewashing cringey... the Aang kid legitimately did look just like Aang, whitewashed or not. That was one thing I had trouble being mad about.

I've always felt kind of guilty because I definitely think the whitewashing was awful, but if there's a single kid out there who looks more like Aang than Noah, I've yet to see them. Of course, I'd rather he not look anything like Aang if it meant he'd be able to act...

Yeah, that change was pretty minor and I don't think it would have even registered with people if the movie hadn't seemed to be so clearly "they just didn't care".

(Anonymous) 2016-07-27 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always thought that the "correct" way to pronounce someone's name is the way that they introduce themselves to you, to the best of your ability. Since the movie was a direct adaptation of the series, the correct way to pronounce the character's name would have been the way that he pronounced it himself in the series. However, the alternate pronunciation is a tiny rabbit turd in the steaming pile of shit that was the ATLA movie, so meh?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-27 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
What does "most Asians" mean? What does "live in Asia" even mean?

Are you saying Indians pronounce it like Indonesians pronounce it like the Japanese pronounce it like the Chinese pronounce it like Filipinos?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the way they pronounced in the film was how an Indian kid the director went to school with pronounced it. Fair enough. It's hardly how "all Asians" pronounce it. Chinese/Japanese/Korean pronunciation is different again.

I like how they made his tattoos a dense pattern instead of solid lines as well. I don't know how legitimate the design they came up with is, though.

I say you would have merit if Shyamalan hadn't changed the actual Chinese in the show to scribbled bullshit and if he had actually consulted Bryke and Sifu Kisu.

And after seeing a review of it, everyone was right, Yue's head looks like a penis.
