Re: Introversion

I think some people, when they're depressed or feeling sad, like to curl themselves up and cover themselves with blankets. It's a comforting somatic sensation. So it's confusing introversion with sadness and depression.

Or maybe introverts just like to be comfy. Nothing wrong with that.

Personally, I am introverted, but I also deal with depression and anxiety, so the upshot is that I don't have to worry too much about the accuracy of the definitions.

I do have the "nesting" instinct. But yeah, I'm also introverted/anxious/depressed.

I'm sure there are extroverts who like to be comfy, too.

I think my problem is that people keep using the term "introvert" when they seem to mean "social anxiety" or "agoraphobia."

Like I would consider myself introverted. I tend to be inwardly-focused, I enjoy being alone and while I like being around people sometimes, after a while I just get tired of it and have to be by myself for a while. I don't like partying or social situations where I have to shmooze with a bunch of people I wouldn't otherwise be interested it.

But that doesn't make me a shut-in who watches TV constantly! In fact, I do like to spend time outdoors, though not necessarily with people, but the memes make it sound like I shouldn't ever leave the house unless it's necessary because there's a slight chance someone might say "hi" when I pass them. And that is more like social anxiety than introversion.

And I kind of suspect I would weird out some of the people who post these memes because I'm introverted and I don't have Netflix. They all seem obsessed with Netflix.

Yeah, I mean, I'm an introvert... but I'm also self-employed. Over the years, I've spent a lot of time level-grinding my social skills to help this endeavor, to the point that apparently some people mistakenly believe I'm extroverted.

Honestly, the only useful thing I've found in the extrovert/introvert thing is advice on recharging. If you're extroverted, you recharge by hanging out with others. If you're introverted, you recharge by getting some alone time. (And even that is probably up for grabs.)

"level-grinding my social skills" is an excellent turn of phrase

Thanks. It's the best way I can describe it. I'll say this about the grueling coming-out gauntlet--it tripled my social skills within the space of a few years!

This. I think most people like curling up alone in a comfortable place, with varying frequencies
