Most of the time, eating out.

There are a few restaurants that really have top chefs and might be worth trying for the experience - but other than that, I'll probably prefer the nice lil' cheap Chinese place.

Cute socks - good quality or bad, they'll get holes soon anyway.

Being a first adopter of technology. Almost never worth it. Later version are almost always cheaper AND better, as they got the bugs sorted.

Plus with new technology there are the risks of a format war that you could choose the wrong side of. My dad is kind of a snob about video quality and he preferred both beta tapes and HD-DVDs but of course VHS and blu-rays were the ones that took off.

You father, of course, was sort of right (but don't tell him) - but yeah, it's not necessarily the best product that gets popular.

I think blurays took off simply because the PS3 could play bluray so people adopted that more quickly.
