What's better on the cheap, FS?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-27 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
What are things you DON'T feel are worth spending a lot of money on? Again, can be anything!

I buy the cheapest bottled water. It all tastes the same to me.

Yup.

As long as the tap water is safe to drink, I'll go with that every time. Bottled water is the stupidest thing, if tap is available.

Same. Honestly, I drink filtered tap water most of the time.

Liquor, tbh. Like, there's a benefit to going midrange, but top shelf usually isn't worth it.

Headphones. I'm perfectly fine with my $8 over-the-ear Kmart headphones.

Same! Then I don't feel guilty if they get shoved in the bag and break.

Huh. I'm the exact opposite. That's one of the few things I'll splurge on, because I can usually tell the difference between high quality headphones and tinny cheap ones right away.

Re: What's better on the cheap, FS?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto. If a cheap-ass pair of earphones from the Post Office lasts me more than a year, why should I spend five times as much for something that's probably not much tougher?

Re: What's better on the cheap, FS?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's worth spending the money and not getting the thin, tinny sound from cheap headphones.

I always get the cheapest (like $2 Target) earbuds, because my cat is a furry little asshole who likes to kill them.

Yeah, most of the time this is true for me too. I did put out some money for a set that I could use the microphone on... but it didn't work.

It's not about them not being worth more, but I get almost all my books from used book sales. I rarely pay more than a dollar for a book. My favorite is the local library's semi-annual bag sale. Pay $2 for a bag and you can fill it with as many books as possible.

Most of the time, eating out.

There are a few restaurants that really have top chefs and might be worth trying for the experience - but other than that, I'll probably prefer the nice lil' cheap Chinese place.

Cute socks - good quality or bad, they'll get holes soon anyway.

Being a first adopter of technology. Almost never worth it. Later version are almost always cheaper AND better, as they got the bugs sorted.

Notebooks and journals. I go through them so quickly, I just buy the cheapass ones like you used in school.

(Sketchbooks, I'm a little pickier on.)

Pricey yarn is nice and feels soft, but dirt-cheap Red Heart and generic brands soften in the wash and work just as well, at least from my experience.

Generic sodas are just as good as regular sodas, sometimes better.

Groceries.

Store brand is usually just as good, if not better, than name brands (Roundy's store brand, for instance, I find to be even slightly better than name brands.)

Basically everything in life so far. Price tag doesn't guarantee quality.

The only things I pay attention to for branding and price tags are cars and electronics.

Snacks. Frozen veggies (seriously, why pay extra for that stupid butter sauce anyhow?).

I know an orchard stand where you can get a cup of fresh pressed cider for a nickel. You pay for it by putting your money in a wooden box with a coin slot in it. I usually go get some at least once a month.

Also, clothing on sale. There's a huge bunch of stuff in my closet that costs in the six to twenty dollar range, without which I would be naked a third of the week.

Video games.

Love them. Almost always wait for them to be dirt cheap before buying them.

Oh, wait -- books, too. Love me a good used book store and I'm in heaven. There was one near where I used to live where you could get almost any paperback for $1. I miss that place.

Phones. I did just buy a smartphone (mostly for Pokemon Go and so far worth it), but an inexpensive one. I'd love to HAVE a fancy bleeding edge $500 phone, but it's not worth spending money on.

Clothes. I love to look cute, but I buy bargain as much as I can and it's not a really high priority. I only go out shopping once or twice a year, and I do tend to enjoy it but I don't typically spend hundreds on those trips.

Makeup. I don't buy it at all except for cosplay. I just don't care. Don't like it on my face, don't want it. (Not judging those who do like it or spend money on it in case anyone wants to say that, but I'm glad it's not part of my budget) (nail polish on the other hand I love, but I don't own a whole ton and it's not that expensive overall. same with jewelry because I am 100% ok with imitation metals)

Air conditioning. I get why most people spend money on it - I do! But I don't get hot often and the few times I do my fan is sufficient. It'd be a huge bill for nothing, for me.

Fancy ass cars. Functional? Long-lasting? Yes, very important. Spending lots of extra money for fancy brand names or a ton of bells and whistles? nah. I genuinely think that even if I had a huge disposable income I'd still drive a Honda or Toyota. I might invest in a new one and tweak it a little, but I'd save so much money by not going for a designer brand.

Speaking of: designer brand clothes, shoes, bags. I love cute bags. I don't think most designer bags are cute, and I actually do judge people who buy (not fake) ones a little 'cause it feels like the only point in getting them is so everyone around you knows you're rich.

Wow, that comment was way longer than I thought it would be.

Phones. I don't want anything in my pocket that will make me cry or excessively bust my budget to replace. I got over my love of fountain pens for the same reason, although I'm told there's no much point in going over $120 unless you're into conspicuous consumption.

I think buying AAA games on release day is generally very foolish. It seems a large number ship with bugs, poor optimization, feature cuts, or problems with online play. I'd much rather wait a year and catch a good sale.

While I buy expensive teas, I also buy cheap ones that act as a back-up so I don't run out of my fruit tea flavours quickly. Those tea bags? The cheapest in the store.
