There are good ways and bad ways to do ad revenue. metafilter does a great job with unobtrusive ads that get screened for bad content.

On the other hand, I think the Wall Street Journal last year was shipping malware through their third-party ad network. I don't trust yahoo in general or the tumblr team to do it right given how much they've pushed autoplay.

Tumblr might get another problem in that the lack of accountability and the ability to make anonymous sideblogs is already toxic in some areas. It's like twitter in that area.
