The ads wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so invasive. Also that bullshit auto-play on video ads was a tipping point for some people.

This so much. If sites didn't use invasive ads and ads that put things on my computer, I wouldn't use adblock. Sorry, but your website's profit isn't worth viruses or spyware or flashing or video ads that are distracting.

Yeah this. Deviantart gives me the old "please turn off your adblocker" thing lately and all I can think is "I'll turn it off once the reports of your ads giving people viruses die down".

I've been complaining about the audio ads for a while now.

"What are you writing, F!S?"
Well, I've been writing about how bad the ads are, and how I gave up and installed Anti-Capitalism.

I cannot do autoplay. I won't support a site that uses autoplay ads. I will either use it with adblocker or not use it at all.

Sidebar ads are fine.

(I don't think this contradicts the "turn off adblocker if you don't want your site to die" stance - ultimately if it comes down to dealing with autoplay or not using the site I'll pick the latter, so if it does, so be it)

There are good ways and bad ways to do ad revenue. metafilter does a great job with unobtrusive ads that get screened for bad content.

On the other hand, I think the Wall Street Journal last year was shipping malware through their third-party ad network. I don't trust yahoo in general or the tumblr team to do it right given how much they've pushed autoplay.

Tumblr might get another problem in that the lack of accountability and the ability to make anonymous sideblogs is already toxic in some areas. It's like twitter in that area.

Ugh, yeah, I actually originally installed stuff to stop auto-play on EVERYTHING, because it was CRIPPLING the computer I was using at the time. (I mean, tumblr was a bear for it to load at the best of times, it being a nine-year-old laptop and all, but once the auto-play started going, it would just CRASH.)

But then, I'm actively looking for a place to go to instead of tumblr. The unstoppable, unfindable, LOUD auto-playing audio ads were too much. I wasn't a fan of the site when I joined around 2010, and my complaints about the UI have only gotten worse over time. One of my pals has been really vouching for Imzy; can anyone else recommend a site? I'm too long-winded for Twitter, and Facebook is just so invasive that it gives me the screaming meemies.

Man, I install that stuff from the get go. A lot of it has to do with the fact that I am married to an It person and he instilled in me a sense of "don't trust shit on the internet."

But that auto-play crap just had me annoyed (i'm bothered by it in an anxiety kind of way, i just found it ridiculously annoying. especially if i'm watching and/or playing something).

If you want me to give you some kind of revenue, Yahoo? Make those fucking ads far less intrusive and safe guard them so that viruses and adware don't get on my computer. B/

Yeah, I HATE auto-play. Slows my computer to a crawl. Like, of all the ads on earth, I hate them the most, because of how they bog down my computer. Image and text ads, I can live with. But GOD do I hate video or audio ads!

Lol, I meant to say I'm NOT bothered by it in an anxiety kind of eay...XD;;

But yeah. My browser slows down, adds cookies and shit that makes it slow to boot up (and i invest in good computers that me and husband slowly upgrade), so yeah. Those fucking ads can shove it. Grrr.

Tumblr Will end up going the route of LJ. Free LJ ended up like that before fandom finally migrated...
