I don't think that sort of mindset is a bad reason for tourism. That is a big part of what my trip to NZ was last year, and I'd be glad to go back and see the South Island and filming locations there.
I'd love to take a flight out to Mount Sunday, the hill Edoras was filmed on. They had to work hard to make sure that everything was restored to original condition when they left, so the bare mountain should look rather pristine.
I know the quarry where Helm's Deem was filmed has now got a lot of grass over quite a bit of it, even though it's still an active quarry.

I'd venture to say at least part of my thoughts on seeing Europe is with that mindset in mind - maybe not definite filming locations but more to see the sort of general landscape that often comes up in fantasy.

I also think the farmers who lent their land to Hobbiton asked for a permanent build when The Hobbit came about because people wanted to see the place it was built and they saw the potential business of making one corner of their farm into a tourist park.
