That's actually a cool and exciting way to choose travel destinations.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-27 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Why shouldn't you do that? Is there some other method of deciding where you want to visit that's any better?

I feel you. I visited one of the places in Tunisia where Star Wars was filmed and it felt....special.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-27 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I definitely want to go to certain places because of my fandoms. Either because something was actually set there, filmed there, or just connected to something in some way. I don't think this is terribly embarrassing.

I think a big chunk of people who visit New Zealand were influenced by the LOTR movies.

Hey, I lived in NZ a while (though for reasons unrelated to fandom), and one of my buddies there lived right next to the quarry where they filmed... either the Mines of Moria or Helm's Deep, I forget which. It was a very beautiful country, and I'm glad I lived there a while. A++ would visit again.

I went to Scotland earlier this summer after watching Outlander, and Iceland last year in part to visit a shoe designer. I might never have thought to go to either place otherwise and they were both incredible. It's a big world out there and I'm in favor of using any and all means to help narrow down your options.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-27 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I understand, NZ has used the fact the LotR Movies were filmed there to boost their tourism?

Who says you shouldn't? They're your vacations, if the destination appeals to you for whatever reason - go nuts.

Hell I totally want to go to New Zealand one day so I can visit Hobbiton, nothing wrong with it OP. :)

I've definitely done this. I loved the Harry Potter studio tour outside of London too.

Please, I let twitter decide a vacation once and it was the best thing ever. A friend and I follow a bunch of celebrities and it sort of spiraled from there of what we'd do that weekend in LA. Best decision ever!

I want to visit Zion National Park because of the Honest Hearts DLC for Fallout New Vegas. So I understand.

Nothing wrong with that at all. Some people want to visit countries because they like the history, some do it for fandom reasons, some because they know people there, etc. Whatever reason works for you is fine.

I've wanted to visit various countries because my favorite musicians are from them :). In regards to New Zealand, a couple of my favorite artists are from there, and I learned more about the country through them and through the fans who live in or have visited that area of the world, and that's just added to my desire to visit them.

Plus, from the photos I've seen, the country itself just looks fucking gorgeous. If and when I get lucky enough to visit someday, I could happily spend all day just staring at the beautiful scenery out there :D.

Go for it, OP! On one of my trips to England, I visited a town featured in Harry Potter, some Potter stuff and Sherlock stuff in London, and two Doctor Who locations, and it was great! My friends and I wanted to go to those places and found that there were so many more cool things there than just the fandom stuff. I was a great way to plan the trip, so don't think you're weird for planning that way!

But those all sound like really cool places to visit!

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hey at least you're choosing gorgeous places to travel to!

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, why not? I went to Cardiff when I was in the UK simply because of the Doctor Who connection, and I'm still really glad I did even though I'm not into the fandom as much anymore. You do you, OP, go travel to places that excite you!

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well, those are all interesting places to visit in their own right, so I don't think they're poor choices at all. This is assuming you plan on doing more than just fandom-related stuff when you get there. I've been to NZ not long after the LOTR trilogy finished and saw a lot of LOTR type tours. They were neat, but it's only a very small fraction of the awesomeness that is NZ.

Why not?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
You could go to Vancouver, too. So many TV shows and movies were filmed there. Seriously, so many (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_filming_locations_in_the_Vancouver_area).

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Those sound like neat places to visit.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to the UK with my mom next summer, and Cardiff was my one must-go destination (there was never any question that we'd be going to London) because Doctor Who.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Hobbiton is AWESOME. I encourage this very much.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely nothing wrong with that at all!

I went to Salzburg, Austria because they filmed Sound of Music there. They actually had an entire tour of the filming sites. When I went to Italy, I took the train to a town called Caserta to visit Queen Amidala's palace from Episode I. It was beautiful. Someday I hope to go to Tunisia.

And my mom planned a trip to the Pacific Northwest around a visit to Forks because she loves Twilight. (I know.)

I say, go for it and enjoy! :)

When I visited Rome a few years ago, I went to all the places named in Dan Brown's Angels and Demons--marvelous way to structure my itinerary. The whole thing gave me a new awareness of Italian Renaissance design and architecture.
