I found him to be more crazy than nerdy (as in, he was an outcast because he was "the weird doomsday guy", not because he was nerdy, in particular). Although to be fair, I don't remember the plot that well.

Pretty much this. I just rewatched it, and I don't think I caught him picking out anyone in particular to blame. More like, he blamed the world. I wish he'd been fleshed out a little more.
