I kinda know how you feel. While I think the premise and some of the characters of GOT is interesting, I'm probbaly never gonna watch it because of all the werid and constant rape. It's just not my thing. Whenever I've brought this up in the past, (especially on this forum when the series started getting popular) I always get a few GOT fans pester me because, "You'd get over it if you just watched it! Rape was super common back then so that makes it realistic, you're just overly sensitive!! If you'd just give the show a chance it wouldn't bother you it's not thaat bad!!!"

And it's just like...no go away plz.

There's hardly "constant rape". And a lot of the horrible stuff happens to men (Theon for example, and it was recently revealed that Euron Greyjoy has been raping his brothers) but that usually flies over the head of the people looking for excuses to be outraged.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
wasn't all the male sexual violence only added like in the most recent book though? like seemingly it only occurred to the author that he could maybe be a little more equal opportunity with his sexual assaults? I heard that, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, yeah. All the implications of male-on-male sexual abuse (of which there are 3 instances IIRC?) only happens in ADWD, come to think of it. Before then, even in contexts where it would make sense, there was nothing.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I like how you just assume an anon who says they don't want to see a lot of rape would be FINE with seeing male-on-male rape, even though that anon didn't say they only had an issue with it happening to women.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably because that's how it is for the overwhelming majority of people who complain.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but when the complaint is "this series has gratuitous rape", pretty sure their issue is the gratuitous rape.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
There were literally zero outrage over Theon's season-long sexual abuse and mutilation at the hands of Ramsay. People even made jokes about it.

Sansa gets raped off-screen and everyone loses their minds.

Oringinal anon here, thanks for backing me up.

Also...ugh. Things like this is why I don't like the GOT fandom imo.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oringinal anon here.

I never said anything about men, dude. I don't like rape regardless to what gender it happens to. Nice try, but pulling a, "Gotcha! You don't care about the menz!!" on me isn't gonna work.

Also people like you are litterally why I stay away from the GOT fandom. I don't wanna watch the show because I don't like lots of rape. Sorry that offends you so much. :/

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
People who go "what about the menz" are the type of people to laugh off male sexual abuse

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. I'm merely pointing out how obnoxious and stupid you're being by accusing me of not careing about male issues, despite the fact that I didn't even mention gender in my op.

But lol okay. Continue to victimize yourself for all I care.

Please don't be a dick and say things like "looking for excuses to be outraged." There are legit reasons not to like or to criticize GoT, and I say that as a huge fan of the series.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
There isn't constant rape. And it usually isn't graphically depicted.

Constant enough :-P

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
LMAO half of the stuff there is stuff that was mentioned or referenced as having occurred in the past

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Kay, I'm an annoying Book Purist about that series so the amount of rape the show added (plus a bunch of other bullshit they pulled) drove me to quit, but even I am copelled to tell you that if you've heard it's CONSTANT RAPE you heard wrong. It is definitely more than the story needs, though.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
There's plenty of rape in the books, too. And weird ass descriptions of penises, and a thirteen-year-old's nipples. Sexual gratuity is definitely a book thing, too.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Do nipples trigger you, anon?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's the part where you try to deny GRRM wants to fuck 13-year-old Danaerys and it isn't obvious in his writing. Go on, I'm ready.

I only read the first book, and one of the reasons I didn't continue was because I didn't like the rape and weird sex descriptions. "constant rape" is probably hyperbole, but I remember a whole lot of jokes about George "Rape Rape" Martin going around before the show existed.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-28 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
You do realize the show has a lot LESS rape than the books, right? They didn't add, they subtracted.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
They did add. There was no Jaime/Cersei rape scene in the book for example, nor was the wedding night with Dany and Drogo rape in the books.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
The latter point is arguable, but I'm talking net subtraction. There's a LOT of rape in the books that's simply absent from the show. Pretty much all the Dothraki scenes, for a start.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-29 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'd argue it's more bearable in the books because rape is only brought up after the fact, is never described in detail, and is usually an offhand remark. Meanwhile the show has graphic unnecessary rape scenes like the gangrape of Craster's daughters. I couldn't believe how male gaze-y that scene was.
