Re: Fandom etiquette question

YES, for goodness sake. Of course you "pretend to like it", why would you even ask?!

Because whether or not it's a good piece of art, they did it for you, and to honor your fic. It's that thought that you should be focusing on, not the art itself.

No, you aren't obligated to pimp it around and brag about it, and you don't have to tell the artist it's the nicest art you've ever seen. But why in the world wouldn't you thank them for their thought and kindness and at least offer a generic compliment?

OP

I should have said, I fully intend to thank them for it. I just feel weird bald face lying to them, that's all.

I'm still shocked that you are even thinking this way.

If you can't think of a single compliment to make to the artist about them and the work to make it a little more personal than just a "thank you", then I don't know what to tell you except it's probably on you and not them.

nayrt - a tad harsh, but I too sometimes wonder at all the people who make a fuss over how they can't possibly craft a nice thank you without lying through their teeth. I assume they never had to write dozens of thank you cards for birthday and Christmas presents from clueless relatives with bad taste when they were growing up...
