I really, really don't understand why people like good characters. They're terribly boring to me. Likely we just want different things from our fiction.

I appreciate that! But I'm also really curious about what makes people like bad characters. How, exactly, they appeal. You know?

I don't know. I guess they allow me to vicariously live out my dark side? How, exactly, do good characters appeal to you?

It's hard to think about, I know!

I think with good characters what I tend to like is (1) their striving and (2) their caring. I like characters who are trying to be good. I like characters who care a lot about things and are trying to figure out how to put that into action. I like characters who are doing the best they can even against all the odds, and I like characters who want the best and want to be good. I want them to be good and I want them to be happy and so I root for them.
