Re: What should I study next?

I find other languages difficult because I have never formally been taught english grammar. (Any skill I have with it is purely by ear with no formal understanding.)

In light of that, do you still think Latin would help me?

The reason that I think Latin helps with that is that learning it forces you to learn the grammar in a way that's upfront and formalized. And also there are actual names for everything and it's done in a way that's mostly straightforward and logically clear compared to a lot of other languages.

That's good to know. I might look into it, thanks.

DA

I think Latin is better for vocabulary than for grammar. Studying Latin does teach you grammar forms, but so does a modern language like German, and there the vocabulary and the kinds of sentences you're working with will likely make this knowledge more useful for English grammar. Latin textbooks tend to use vocabulary and sample sentences that are about ancient Roman culture, so it can be hard to make the connection, whereas a German textbook will have you writing about what you did over the weekend/how many siblings you have/what your favorite food is, not who killed whom in the forum.

What Latin is good for is teaching you the Latin words that evolved into some of our English words today, so you start to recognize roots and stems and you can guess at the meaning of unfamiliar words. If you're going to take a standardized test like the SAT or GRE some time in the near future, study Latin. Otherwise, skip it.

It can also help if you want to study romance languages.
