The implication here is that it's always going to be an argument, not a conversation or a discussion. There are some people who will turn every discussion into an argument, but not everyone will. I've had plenty of conversations with people who disagree with me where I'm just trying to understand their point of view and they're happy to find someone who is sincerely asking rather than just making assumptions and putting words in their mouth.

I think the same things are mostly true even for sincere good-faith discussions. It takes real work to try and understand peoples' views, in my experience.

I guess. But straw men annoy me so it's just not worth the irritation for me to knock them down. I end up trying to work backward to find the actual nuanced beliefs that got simplified down to the irritating straw man, which is just as much effort.
