Cover versions you would like to exist

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some songs that you would like to see cover versions of? What type of cover versions? Any artist in mind who should do the cover?

I wanna hear the hip-hop version of Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer. That would be something to hear.

And also angsty teengirl cover version of the Wurzels "Blackbird". I mean, just for lulz.

It might be kind of a "straightforward" choice in the sense that it wouldn't be much of a stretch for them musically/lyrically, but I've always thought Zager and Evans' "In the Year 2525" would be a perfect song for Muse to cover. I just think the futuristic aspect of the lyrics would appeal to Matt Bellamy (and it'd be fun to hear him belt them out), and the kinda dramatic style of the music would fit nicely with the band's sound.

OMG

You're the anon who posted the question about what the world would be like in 2525 aren't you?

I wondered if that was someone looking for a comeback from the song.

Nope, different anon :). I honestly don't know if I even remember seeing someone ask that question on here.

(I am now trying to imagine the world that far ahead now you mention it, though :p. I'd be long dead by then, obviously, but still...)

A cover of Bohemian Rhapsody in which the band uses their different styles of music instead of just copying Queen's styles.

I've always thought that the greatness of Bohemian Rhapsoy lies entirely behind Queen's idiosyncratic performance of it though. If you strip away that then, well, it's not got much else going on imo.

I think there is a band out there who can do it. One day, we will have our champion.

Ooh, there's an interesting idea. I'd like to hear that.

Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" from the POV of a rich asshole who laughs at princesses who try to get him to change for them.

It'd be interesting to me for three reasons:
1) guy acting like a total dick acknowledges he is one - for once
2) girls trying to get someone to change "for love" i.e. emotional manipuation, get called out explicitly
3) nobody is the good guy

Because I just stumbled over my really, really old Chris de Burgh stuff: I would love some acoustic cover versions of some of his songs by an assortment of ... I guess indie and singer/songwriter type musicians. Because damn, the cheese is strong with those songs and they are defnitely pretty overproduced (and I'm not that fond of his voice anymore) but there are some very pretty songs on his earlier albums (the newer stuff is pretty bad though). They would definitely benefit from a bit of understatement.

It doesn't have vocals, but Todd Taylor did a banjo cover of Freebird which sounds pretty good.

A highly sarcastic and shouty pyshcopunk cover of "Happy." "BECAUSE I'M HAPPYYYYYYYY!"

Similarly, a queer and genderswapped performance of Meatloaf's "Bat Out of Hell" although you might as well go to the source and just do "Grease."

Now I want to hear Pink Floyd doing Happy.

Oh god I would so be there for Bat Out Of Hell. I didn't know I needed this until you came and showed me the light, dude.

I wish Joe Cocker had covered the entire Beatles catalogue. He did enough that a album of Beatles covers could be released, but I'd have loved to see a box set of him doing all of them.

Wait, he did others? I thought he only did With a Little Help from My Friends and Come Together?

Do you have links?!

My personal favorite cover already exists. Fuck it, here it is for all to see. And yes, that is Marty Friedman on the guitar and Mick Karn on the bass. You're welcome. xD

I could have fucking sworn the first version of Daniel Johnson's 'Devil Town' I ever heard involved a quiet acoustic piano accompaniment, BUT I'VE NEVER FUCKING FOUND IT. Every version of the song I've heard just isn't as good as that simple piano melody + vocal version I could've sworn I heard! Did I somehow make it up? I don't get it!

Also, I want a version of Voltaire's 'Hell In A Handbasket' that's darker, even more bitterly sarcastic, and grittier. I love the original version, but I want an even bleaker version too!

I would love to hear The Protomen perform more song covers (I love their original songs too). After listening to their Queen cover album, I want to hear them try Who Wants to Live Forever.

It'll never happen because Ray Charles is dead but I wish he had covered "Desperado" (originally by the Eagles) as a duet with Willie Nelson. "It Was A very Good Year" isn't enough.

Oooh. Good choice. I would've liked hearing that, I think.
