I've decided big holidays are overrated. Not that I don't love them, but I feel like every year someone's upset because things didn't go as planned, or weren't how they used to be, someone was missing (whether through death, divorce, just unable to make it)... maybe if we had a more casual approach to them, people wouldn't be so miserable "the happiest time of the year."

From the vacation ads I definitely get a strong cultural message saying be happy to work 9 to 5 for someone else's benefit because you're going to have your amazing 2 week holiday where you spend all the money and have all the life experiences etc etc

Anyway it sounds like you've had some very specific experiences and this isn't really a thing my family does, but I do agree with you.

Yep. Mum and I have long since downgraded our Christmases to be far more manageable. Don't plan a feast, just plan a nice meal with something you don't usually have.

Mum and I usually just cook for ourselves, so by definition cooking a big meal for both of us is out of the ordinary. A meal of turkey and roast vegetables with a dessert after is a special meal for us, so most of the time we only do it on holidays.
