Rupert Grint is a great comedy actor, but he is not that great a character or dramatic actor. Not that there is anything wrong with being a great comedic actor, some people have made very lucrative careers out of it and it is a valid skill in its own right. I mean think of all the movies that purported to be comedies but starred someone that could kill a joke at fifty paces. That is half of Grint's problem.

The other half is that Danny Radcliffe is a great character actor and that Emma Watson is a knockout actor all around. That gave them great chemistry and really only left the comedic stuff for Grint to work with. The movies became gradually darker, and so left him with less and less to do.

That and all the other great acting talents all over the movies just totally steamrolled him.
