I used to think this. Then I found out I needed a credit card to have good credit so I could rent an apartment without needing it to be cosigned.

Yeah, this is just a very twisted thing in the American system, I think. I'm not aware of it existing anywhere else.

Like, if I could prove I have a steady job, I could rent an apartment, no problem. And since I literally never had debt, my bank would actually loan me a shitton (like more than I'd be comfortable with) to buy a house with hardly any questions asked.

It's very similar in Canada, which given how closely our financial institutions are to each other probably isn't a surprise.
