American patriotism kind of weirds me out. I get the idea of respecting particular values like free speech, but there's a running theme among patriots that "loyalty" is more important than upholding any particular value, and acting against the American government and/or military leaders is evil even if you're upholding some value. That just doesn't make sense to me in the context of a country that was founded on violent rebellion against a government. Is it really just the passage of centuries that makes you a loyal American instead of a loyal Brit? (And for that matter, isn't "America" supposed to be the people who live in America, not just the people elected or appointed to be in charge?)

It's a question of legitimacy of rule. And, in my view, part of that is that the government is a thing of the people - it's a point of republican principle.

That said obviously loyalty isn't the most important virtue or anything like that. I don't know, people say a lot of wooly-headed nonsense.

You have to remember what Paul Haggis said after he left the Church of Scientology: "I was in a cult for thirty-four years, and everybody knew but me."

The USA is a cult. It's a religious movement. It has a "civic religion." It is not a religion to everyone, but it is understood exactly as such by its adherents. It's possible to be born a US citizen, live one's whole life as such, and be considered not a "real American" for various reasons.

When you understand that the USA is almost exactly a cult for many Americans, then you can see how certain kinds of political nonsense are mainstream.

Cult is an extremely strong word to use here / strong claim to make.

Yeah, Cult is two letters off.
