Yeah, if you went to the tracking screen and selected a pokemon then clicked on the compass in the top corner, it would show you which direction it was. Waaaaay more useful than the steps, but now its gone too.

Why did nobody mention this earlier?! it was always "the green square means you're closer" when no, that just means the ordering changed.

no the compass never functioned that way. it's possible you happened to find pokemon that way, but the compass feature just makes it so that it points north (and you can rotate the map manually) OR that it always points in the direction you're facing and moves with you. it has never indicated the direction of the pokemon.
