I can't speak for everyone who posts OC art, but I know I post pictures of my OCs on Deviant Art because I like having pictures that define what my OCs look like, and I like to store them in an easily accessible gallery so I can show them to people who might want to know what they look like (like RP partners).

It may also be a case of showing off one's artistic ability through a favourite character. In my case, most of my posts are things like Sims screencaps and dollmaker products. I don't claim much artistic ability with those but I am merely showing what I have managed to put together with other people's tools.

People don't have to give a shit about my Silmaril OCs to come look at my latest picture of Elenlossë practicing archery and comment on how the over-all tone of the picture is dark and I may need to find some program that can lighten it up (because frankly the screencaps do come out darker than they look while I'm inside the game).
