I'm similar. All my ships pretty much fall under a very general tank/snark dynamic. Tony/Steve? YES. Steve/ Bucky or Sam? Nope, that's Tank/Tank. Tony/Loki? Nah, Snark/Snark. And if a character doesn't really fit either one I probably won't really ship them with anyone.

The only other dynamic that rivals it is mentor/student and good luck admitting that one in current fandom atmosphere.

The brawn, the focus tends to be on how physically powerful they are. They're usually clever/common sense rather than 'smart/genius' and often dependable and nice. Captain America and Thor, Clay Bailey from Xiaolin Showdown, Hunk from the new Voltron.

The characters that when the group is faced with a locked door is the one to pull whoever's trying to break it down aside and then knock the door down with one punch.

I see how that works. Thanks for the explanation! What happens if a character is both? Can one character swap roles depending on the ship they're in?

Sometimes. Tony Stark is one of those characters that sometimes gets written as pure snark and then sometimes gets played up as a big ol' slab of beef compared to Banner who is the frail nerdy one. But generally for me I tend to prefer them in one role or another.

Have you tried Star Wars for mentor/student? Particularly Clone Wars/Prequels. Maybe it's just who I'm following, but master/padawan seems to be a pretty accepted shipping dynamic over there.

I freakin' love Star Wars for that. Obi-Wan/Anakin and Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan are my jam. Snape/Harry used to have some real gems too (like the Mirror of Maybe I check about once a year in eternal hope it might suddenly become finished)

Though man it was weird when I saw a tumblr fan talking about how 'gross' mentor/student relationships were and how Kanan/Ezra or Anakin/Ahsoka fans were messed up.... and half their reblogs were "YAY Obi-Wan/Anakin OTP!!!"

Where is The Mirror of Maybe? It sounds really familiar but I can't remember anything about it so I don't know if I read it or not. I like mentor/student relationships too so if I haven't read it before I might want to.

Rereading as an adult it's a little cheesy and puts in a lot of non-canon worldbuilding fantasy stuff, but I have a soft spot for it.

Lol, Ani/Obi was my jam in high school and I still have a soft spot for it. But then again, I also ship teh FUCK out of Ansoka, so...

Tumblr can piss off quite honestly.

It mainly bugged me because I can see if mentor/student squicks people that's 100% understandable and I respect it. I've got some serious pairing dynamic squicks of my own, it's all cool.

But come ON. Pretty much everything they call squicky about Kanan/Ezra and Anakin/Ahsoka apply just as much or more to Ani/Obi. (Anakin was 9 and Obi-Wan 33. Obi-Wan actually DID know him when he was an adult and Anakin was still a prepubescent child. There's nothing morally wrong about that fictional glass house, but chucking stones is kind of extra ridiculous)
