Again, people are really not out here saying that any person who dislikes a certain ship is racist. Theyre saying that, when you look at cross-fandom trends, there is a racial pattern that emerges in general.

Also the cute / sexy dichotomy is an interesting one and im curious what you think differentiates them.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That's fair.

Not disagreeing with your secret overall, but how is Captain America "cute" rather than "sexy"?

Dat ass!

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably that he's wholesome and a golden boy with puppy dog eyes? I would put him as 'more cute than sexy' myself, even if he's both.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but if I had to guess the fact he's generally fanon-cast as adorable/adorkable rescues kittens and puppies and bakes cookies and volunteers with the Boy Scouts and is looking for The One to have a house, a yard, and a white picket fence with.

As opposed to more badboy sexy, or a grump with a heart of gold, maybe a tragic backstory.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm similar. All my ships pretty much fall under a very general tank/snark dynamic. Tony/Steve? YES. Steve/ Bucky or Sam? Nope, that's Tank/Tank. Tony/Loki? Nah, Snark/Snark. And if a character doesn't really fit either one I probably won't really ship them with anyone.

The only other dynamic that rivals it is mentor/student and good luck admitting that one in current fandom atmosphere.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I get Snark, but what do you mean by Tank?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The brawn, the focus tends to be on how physically powerful they are. They're usually clever/common sense rather than 'smart/genius' and often dependable and nice. Captain America and Thor, Clay Bailey from Xiaolin Showdown, Hunk from the new Voltron.

The characters that when the group is faced with a locked door is the one to pull whoever's trying to break it down aside and then knock the door down with one punch.

Have you tried Star Wars for mentor/student? Particularly Clone Wars/Prequels. Maybe it's just who I'm following, but master/padawan seems to be a pretty accepted shipping dynamic over there.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I freakin' love Star Wars for that. Obi-Wan/Anakin and Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan are my jam. Snape/Harry used to have some real gems too (like the Mirror of Maybe I check about once a year in eternal hope it might suddenly become finished)

Though man it was weird when I saw a tumblr fan talking about how 'gross' mentor/student relationships were and how Kanan/Ezra or Anakin/Ahsoka fans were messed up.... and half their reblogs were "YAY Obi-Wan/Anakin OTP!!!"

lb_lee: M.D. making a shocked, confused face (serious thought)

[personal profile] lb_lee 2016-08-01 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I misread this as tank/shark and for a moment had weird aquarium fic in my head.

Curious anon here--I would have called JD and Turk pretty different characters; OP, what makes them too similar to ship for you?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP but I get it, they're both more adorable than sexy. There are different ways to be adorable like there are different ways to be sexy, but they both fit the mark to me. I wouldn't call either of them a 'more sexy than cute' character.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
SA

Using the examples OP gave, Sam and Dean are different characters but they are the same archetype, for example. Turk and JD are too - lovable goofballs.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand the idea but most of your examples are so simplified they're basically meaningless. Youre trying to explain it like it's logical when it's not.
Cap and Tony are somehow opposites but Dean and Cas are just the same? Just because the differences don't interest your shipping brain doesn't mean they're not there.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say Dean is the sexy one and Cas is the cute one?

mte.
I think OP is trying to categorize it in a way that makes sense to them, which appears to work broadly, but ultimately sometimes it's hard to identify why the brain will latch on to one ship and not another...
It's like how I like listening to "dramatic songs" while walking, but some of the songs that my brain decides it likes and can use for drama are not songs that I would normally classify as being particularly dramatic, and vice-versa.

I totally get the “opposites attract" thing, yet I also have plenty of ships where both characters have heaps in common and seem to share the same mind, lol. I can never quite be sure what I'm going to ship until I get into something, though I usually have a good idea of what will interest me. Sometimes a ship looks to hit the spot, then does nothing for me.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool story.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-01 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you. Most of my ships have to have characters with opposite personalities and/or ideologies. Funny character/serious character, dangerous/innocent, or logical/emotional, for example. Generally if they have similar personalities or outlooks on life I just can't ship them romantically.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-01 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Cap is sexier than Iron Man tbh fam.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-01 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Preach.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-01 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, Cap's attractive in a cute and wholesome way.

It's like... movie Jane Foster or Darcy vs. movie Poison Ivy. They're all attractive, but Poison Ivy is sexy. I can't really picture Jane Foster putting on three strategically placed ivy leaves to try and distract Thanos or something.
