Starfleet is full of deranged neophiles racing around space in the most bleeding edge tech possible :no other species has all the wacky failures and holodeck disasters because they are much more reasonable. It's also why humans seem to disproportionately die but also disproportionately win; no one can predict their crazy new inventions.

Given the entire concept of Starfleet was born out of the space race, I feel like this is completely valid.

Oh, I remember this one. Yes. And this was how humans did so well against the Borg as well: Borg will adapt to any technology once they've fought it once, but with Starfleet bloody technology you can get fifteen completely different disasters from one piece of tech depending on who sneezed at it last, and they come up with new once-off superweapons for funsies on their day off.
