Shipping Patterns

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by number 6.

Have you noticed any patterns or consistent archetypes in the pairings you ship? Or are you all over the place?

Re: Shipping Patterns

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have just one pattern or set of types, but I do ship only characters that aren't too similar. In reality birds of a feather flock together and similar people lead to more stable and comfortable relationships and all that, but in fiction there's less to explore in the romance when they're already agreed upon 90% of everything there is to discuss.

if I ship a man and a lady they can probably be adequately summarized thusly:
him: a mess; her: under appreciated goddess; she: could step on his face every day; he: would love it

prime examples: steve/peggy, josh/donna, max/furiosa

I've noticed I like when the characters don't just love each other but there's an element of at least one of them admiring the other and maybe wishing they could be more like the aspect they admire. Or they're just really proud of how amazing the other is.

I have some patterns. I often ship friendship pairings, though I don't love every pairing that involves friendships.

Villain/Villain and villain/hero ships are also things I love.

And there are some pairings I ship just for the hotness factor.

Tragic ships where one or both of them canonly dies

Well everyone dies eventually, anon.

But not everyone really ships.

I don't think I have a shipping pattern. I have a pattern of falling in love with a character and shipping them with everyone. 90% of the time that is always the second most popular in each fandom. Also, jerks with a soft gooey center.

Re: Shipping Patterns

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
if a pairing involves a hot pair of brothers, I'm probably going to ship it tbh

I like your forthright manner, anon.

Re: Shipping Patterns

(Anonymous) 2016-07-31 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
- both characters need to be really intense and competent, but in different and complementary ways, and each really appreciates and admires the other's competence

- there should be some angst but the characters involved should be really stoic about it. stoicism is good generally.

- i should want them to be happy

- if there is a Team Dad and Team Mom, i will ship them

I do have a big thing for friends-turned-lovers.But, it depends on dynamics. I like pairings with a lot of potential for h/c.

Generally speaking I'm fairly varied, since I tend to get attached to specific characters and ship them around, but I do seem to have a bit of a thing for pairs that are from opposite sides of a cultural divide and/or actual war. Ivan/Victoria from RED, Aziraphale/Crowley from Good Omens, Legolas/Gimli from LotR, Sarek/Amanda (and arguably Spock/McCoy) from Star Trek, Illya/Napoleon from MFU.

Delicate-looking, emotionally-damaged girl who could still kick your ass/giant gruff bruiser dude with a secret gentle side. Pairings where it looks unbalanced on paper because one is the other's boss but neither of them actually gives a damn about the chain of command.

I've got no relationship dynamic pattern, any relationship type can appeal to me but more often than not my OTP in a fandom will be my fave character with another(usually my second fave but not always).

Lots of shitty hurt comfort fic with grown men acting like petulant 11 year old girls. Shipping is the cancer of fandom right now.

Not particularly... they kind of run the gamut of anything from rivalslash to best friends to trusted lieutenant, but they are typically the most popular pairing in the fandom (e.g. Wesker/Chris, Seifer/Squall, Seishirou/Subaru). If I don't, it's because the juggernaut pairing is... stupid. Like it's two guys who talked to each other one time but are pretty (e.g. Soap/Ghost). Alternatively, if they're het, they're the one that ends up being canon (e.g. I shipped Kataang from the start, John and Aeryn in Farscape, etc.)

Idk, my tastes are just basic, I guess.

(But there are all kinds of zany exceptions like Briggs/Alpha-Two from Green Zone you don't even know.)

Ships where one or preferably both parties have an unhealthy obsession on the other (but it isn't canonly romantic), but also have something important in common (so they almost feel like 'soulmates gone wrong'). Often overlaps with hero/villain, but the obsession is more important than the antagonism. I just love it when someone seems to think about the other person alll the time, I know it's bad and unhealthy but I can't help romanticizing it in fiction.

Examples:
Buffy/Faith, Jimlock, Ben/Locke from LOST, Wincest (non-villainous yet definitely obsessive example), Rinharu on S1, early SwanQueen

Ohhh yeah. My OTPs have a definite pattern.

Jerk with a heart of gold, intelligent, devoted, usually older/supernatural + spunky oddball who is either a grounding force or matches The Jerk in wit/intelligence. Oddly enough, usually my pairings have one light-haired and one dark-haired.

Examples: Inu Yasha/Kagome, Beetlejuice/Lydia, Jareth/Sarah, Snape/Hermione (fandom edition), Howl/Sophie, Iason/Riki

My shipping patterns are pretty vague, but they tend to be:

1) I have to believe that the characters are "better together" - they are happier together than alone, and they will help each other emotionally in the long run. Often in a pairing I will have one character who is my absolute fave, and in those cases I will likely ship them with whoever I think will make them happiest.

2) angst/tension. If there's no Issue, I'm much less likely to get into it. H/C is a go.

Mentor/Student and Older Man/Younger Woman. And I love them.

Re: Shipping Patterns

I don't have any overall patterns, but if I'm going to be shipping enemies, they're going to have a background as prior friends or lovers. (Doctor/Master, Stucky, 006/007.) If it's a het ship, I tend to go for pairings where she's older or outranks him and they can both verbally hold their own. But both of these are more like guidelines anyway. Or sometimes I'll have a fandom bicycle who I'll ship with everybody. Or I'll just ship everybody with everybody.
